Water Quality Monitoring along the Doan Brook

Doan Brook is a nearly 8 mile long brook from its headwaters in Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights to where it lets out into Lake Erie. It passes through Lower Lake, Horseshoe Lake, several culverts in downtown Cleveland, past Rockefeller Lagoon, and through the Cultural Gardens. As it makes it’s way through the watershed, the water’s composition and quality changes as a result of the environment that it runs through changing. DBWP monitors the water quality along its path to Lake Erie to monitor the health of the stream.

We record water quality data at 15 different sites along the brook in an effort to determine the health of the stream as well as watching for changes due to pollution or restoration projects. Key data collected includes temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity. All data is collected and published here on Water Reporter. We go out to collect data once a month and would love to have volunteers to help us expand the program! It is a great way to help contribute to the fight against climate change on a local level.

In addition to our water quality monitoring program, we would like to thank dedicated DBWP volunteer Kathy Smachlo who monitors at Southerly Park! You can check out the data that Kathy collects for Salt Watch here: https://www.cleanwaterhub.org/site/34930.
